This fall, the Ecosocialism Working Group (EWG) focused our attention on fighting for a Cambridge Green New Deal (GND) and organizing opposition to utility rate hikes across the Commonwealth. In late November, EWG members organized a virtual rally and turned out 26 community members to give public comment in favor of the Cambridge GND at a City Council hearing. There will be another public hearing in January/February, and we’re looking to double our number of supporters!
In December, we co-sponsored a chilly rally outside South Station calling on incoming Gov. Healey to appoint Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Commissioners that will stick up for ratepayers and accelerate the transition to clean energy. Along with our coalition partners in 350 MA, MothersDecember 10 rally outside DPU headquarters Out Front, GreenRoots, and Fix the Grid, we turned out over 85 brave souls! As electricity and gas bills continue to increase this winter, we’ll be organizing more actions and public education events in January.
Finally, we advanced our public advocacy and education by hosting a reading group on degrowth, a webinar on militarism and climate change, and a training on op-ed writing. In the coming months, we will be using our blog to dive deeper into all our efforts. Our next monthly meeting will be Thursday, January 7 at 7 pm – in person at the Democracy Center in Cambridge or virtually on Zoom. Email ecosocialism@bostondsa.org for the invitation or any questions about our work!
