As we close out February, ecosocialists in the Boston area are keeping busy by supporting area campaigns and planning social events so we have something to look forward to as we slog through the snow! Read on to learn more about some of our February activities.
Winter Rate Hikes
We’ve partnered with Fix the Grid to organize dissent against the winter utility rate hikes in Massachusetts. An earlier blog post broke down the components of electricity bills and the forces that lead to the steep increases like those residents across the Northeast are facing this winter.
This organizing culminates in a rally on Thursday, March 2 at 11am. Click here for details and registration.
Green New Deal for Cambridge
Our partnership with local groups continued as we approach crucial hearings for the Green New Deal for Cambridge. This legislation would require large new non-residential buildings to be net zero from day one, create net zero targets for existing buildings, levy a compliance fee for excess emissions, and establish free green jobs training programs for low-income Cambridge residents.
As plans for the late-March/early-April City Council hearing solidify, we’ll be scheduling a rally and doing phone and text banking to turn out as many Cambridge-connected folks to voice their support at the hearing.
Strategic Campaign and Internal Organizing
In addition to the support we’ve been lending to local progressive environmental efforts, we’re focused on fleshing out a strategic priority to focus on for the next couple years. We’re also working to add more opportunities for fun and connection, beyond the outing after our monthly meeting, including a potluck coming up next month.
