This Earth Month, some of our campaigns heated up, while we took time to plan our future priorities.
Strategic Planning
We held our annual Strategy Meeting at the Beacon Hill Friends House with some joining online. About 15 comrades met for five hours to choose a campaign for the coming year, think through our internal organizing and structures and eat some tasty snacks.
Using a consensus-based decision making process, the assembled group agreed to move forward with a campaign to decarbonize Somerville Public Schools. There’ll be a lot of discussion to come, including at our upcoming May meeting – stay tuned and look out for plenty of opportunities to get involved!
Green New Deal for Cambridge
In collaboration with local environmental groups, we organized a rally for the Green New Deal for Cambridge ahead of a crucial hearing. More than 70 people turned out and the public comment at the hearing caused it to stretch an hour past schedule as residents, students and climate experts argued for the strongest possible bill. Later in the month, the City Council voted in amendments that toughened the legislation. We’ll continue to watch and support this legislation as it moves through the process in May.
Earth Day Rally
We co-sponsored an Extinction Rebellion Earth Day Rally on Friday, April 21 outside of Boston City Hall, to demand no new fossil fuel infrastructure.
